Our Story

The Electech Innovation Cluster was established in 2020, born out of a shared challenge faced by electronics businesses in the Lancaster district: a shortage of skilled talent. Local companies struggled to find qualified electronic engineering professionals, and few young people were entering the workforce with these in-demand skills.

Recognizing the need for a solution, the founding members applied to the Department for Education, resulting in the launch of the pioneering Tech Lancaster Skills Bootcamp. This program, initially led by a core team, was later taken forward by Nicola Mortimer and Rich Grant of Milliamp Technologies.

As the initiative gained momentum, the founding companies discovered the power of collaboration. United in their goals, Kate Houlden of Like Technologies, Chris Mayne of Forsberg, Natasha McCrone of System Loco, and Matt Chamberlain of OTAQ formally established the Electech Innovation Cluster. Phil Leigh from the University of Cumbria soon joined them, bringing academic expertise to the board. In 2023, Mark Jordan of Oxley Developments also joined the board, further strengthening the leadership.

Today, the Electech Innovation Cluster boasts over 50 members and associate members, all working to advance the electronics industry across North Lancashire and South Cumbria. Together, we’re building a thriving community to drive growth, innovation, and opportunity in the region's electronics sector.
